How to Make a Countdown Wallpaper for an Exam, Trip or Event on Android

A countdown widget is easy to ignore. A countdown that is the wallpaper is impossible to ignore, which is exactly what you want before an exam, and exactly what makes the days before a trip sweeter.

Pick the right kind of countdown

  • Deadline: an exam, a submission, a race. You want urgency.
  • Anticipation: a birthday, a holiday, a reunion. You want a daily smile.
  • Milestone: days since you quit something, or until a contract ends.

Create the wallpaper

PaceWalls turns any date into a live wallpaper that shows the days left, as a filling dot grid, a bar, a ring, or text over a photo of your choosing. It updates itself each day and uses almost no battery.

  1. Install PaceWalls and choose Countdown (or Birthday for a yearly one).
  2. Enter the event name and date.
  3. Pick a style and colours, or a photo background with a readable tint.
  4. Set it as the lock screen wallpaper, the home screen wallpaper, or both.

Make it motivating, not stressful

For exams, pair the countdown with a goal tracker on the same wallpaper, such as "40 study sessions", so you see progress next to the deadline rather than only the shrinking number. For holidays, use a photo of the destination as the background. Change the style when it stops registering; novelty is part of why it works.

After the event

Swap the countdown for the next one, or switch to a year or month progress tracker so the wallpaper keeps earning its place. Your dates and photos stay on the device; the app has no account.

Frequently asked questions

Can I run two countdowns at once?

Yes. Add more than one tracker to the wallpaper, for example an exam date and a holiday.

Does it count hours or only days?

The wallpaper shows days, which is what a glance needs; the dot grid gives a feel for the fraction of the day as well.

Will it drain the battery?

No. It redraws only when the value changes and stops while the screen is off.
