How to Lock WhatsApp on Android So Nobody Can Read Your Chats
WhatsApp is the first thing people open when they borrow your phone "to check something". Locking it is easy; locking it in a way that does not reveal your password to the person standing next to you takes one more step.
WhatsApp's built-in locks
App lock: in WhatsApp, open Settings > Privacy > App lock and turn on fingerprint or face unlock. Good, but it can be disabled from inside WhatsApp by anyone who gets past it once, and on phones where family members share a fingerprint it is no barrier at all.
Chat lock: long-press a chat and choose Lock chat to move it to a locked folder with its own secret code. Useful for one or two conversations; it does not protect the rest of the app, and the locked folder itself is a signal that something is hidden.
Lock the whole app with a picture code
Picture AppLock locks WhatsApp (and any other app) behind a photo. Opening WhatsApp shows the image; only your three secret taps let it through. Nobody sees digits or a pattern, so nobody can copy them, and uninstall protection stops the lock being removed.
- Set up Picture AppLock with a photo and your three spots.
- In the app list, enable the lock for WhatsApp (and WhatsApp Business if you use it).
- Choose Lock immediately in the auto-lock settings for maximum privacy, or a short grace period if you switch apps often.
- Turn on uninstall protection.
Cover the other doors
- Turn off message previews on the lock screen: Settings > Notifications > WhatsApp > hide content.
- Lock the Gallery too; WhatsApp media is saved there. See locking your gallery.
- Lock WhatsApp Web sessions by logging out of linked devices you do not use.
- Keep the phone's own screen lock on; an app lock is the second line, not the first.
Which lock should you use?
Use WhatsApp's chat lock for a couple of sensitive conversations on a phone that is otherwise yours. Use an app-level lock when other people regularly handle the phone, and choose the picture code when those people are close enough to watch you unlock.
Frequently asked questions
Will notifications still show new messages?
Yes, unless you hide notification content in Android settings. The lock protects opening the app, not the notification shade.
Can I lock WhatsApp with a fingerprint as well?
Keep WhatsApp's own fingerprint lock on if you like; the picture lock sits in front of it.
What happens if I forget my picture code?
Use the fingerprint or face recovery in Picture AppLock to set a new code.
