How to Record Square or Vertical Video Directly on iPhone (No Cropping Later)

Instagram wants square or vertical, YouTube wants horizontal, WhatsApp does not care, and your editor wants an hour of your evening to crop everything to size. Choosing the frame shape before you record removes the whole step.

Why the Camera app always records 16:9

The Camera app records video at the sensor's wide aspect ratio. Hold the phone upright and you get a tall 9:16 file; hold it sideways and you get 16:9. There is no square option, and no way to see the vertical framing you will post if you are shooting horizontally for YouTube at the same time.

Cropping afterwards works, but every crop throws away pixels, the framing you chose while shooting no longer matches, and batch-cropping a dozen clips is tedious.

Choose the shape, then shoot to fit

Multi-mode Video Recorder lets you pick the output frame before you press record: Horizontal (1920×1080), Vertical (1080×1920), Square (1080×1080), or Auto, which follows how you hold the phone. The preview shows exactly the frame that will be saved, so you compose for the final shape rather than guessing.

  1. Open the app and tap the aspect button on the camera screen.
  2. Pick Square for feed posts, Vertical for Stories, Reels and Shorts, or Horizontal for YouTube and TV.
  3. Frame the shot inside the preview and record. The file is already the right shape.

The frame shape works together with every mode: a level, square product video or a vertical dual-camera reaction are both one tap away.

Picking the right shape for each platform

  • Instagram feed: square or 4:5; square is the safe choice that never gets cropped in the grid.
  • Stories, Reels, Shorts, TikTok: vertical 9:16.
  • YouTube, websites, presentations: horizontal 16:9.
  • WhatsApp and messages: anything; vertical fills a phone screen best.

Keep the quality up

Because the app records the chosen shape at full 1080p rather than cropping a finished clip, square and vertical files keep their sharpness. Pair that with the HEVC format for small files, and turn on HDR in Settings if you want extra highlight detail on screens that support it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I record 4K square video?

The app records at 1080p in all three shapes, which matches what social platforms deliver after compression. Keep the Camera app for 4K horizontal footage.

Does Auto switch shapes while recording?

No. Auto picks horizontal or vertical when the recording starts and keeps it for the whole clip.

Does Level mode work in square?

Yes. All four modes work with every frame shape.
