How to Download Files Privately on Android Without Leaving a Trace
An incognito tab forgets the page you visited, then saves the file you downloaded to the same Downloads folder as everything else, where the gallery and the file manager show it to anyone. Private browsing was never private downloading.
What incognito actually hides
Incognito and private tabs skip history, cookies and site data on the device. Downloads are different: the file is a normal file in Downloads, it appears in the gallery if it is an image or video, and the browser's download list may still list it. Your network provider and the website see the visit as usual.
Browse and download into a vault
ShareKeep Vault has a built-in incognito browser. Pages you open are not kept in any history, and anything you download goes straight into the vault's hidden folder, never into Downloads or the gallery. The vault opens with your PIN.
- Open ShareKeep Vault and tap the browser.
- Visit the page and tap the download link or long-press the image.
- The file lands in the vault. Open it there, or export it deliberately later.
Privacy limits worth knowing
- The website and your network still see the request; use a VPN if that matters.
- Files in the vault are hidden on this phone, not encrypted end-to-end across devices; there is no sync at all.
- Deleting the app deletes the vault, so export what you need to keep.
Good uses
- Saving a personal document from a portal without a copy in Downloads.
- Collecting reference images for a surprise gift without spoiling it in the gallery.
- Keeping a receipt or a ticket out of the shared photo stream.
Frequently asked questions
Does the built-in browser block ads or trackers?
It is a lightweight private browser focused on not keeping history and on vault downloads; use it for the download, not as your main browser.
Can I move a vault file back to Downloads?
Yes. Export it from the vault whenever you want the visible copy.
Will the file show in "Recent files"?
No. Vault files are stored in a private location that file managers do not index.
