How to Find and Delete Duplicate Photos on Android
Twelve nearly identical photos of the same sunset, three copies of a WhatsApp forward, the screenshot you saved twice: duplicates are the most common waste on a phone and the most tedious to find by scrolling.
Why duplicates pile up
- Burst and HDR shots save several frames per press.
- Messaging apps save received images to the gallery, then you save them again.
- Cloud sync re-downloads copies after a reinstall.
- Edits keep the original next to the edited version.
Google Photos helps a little
Google Photos hides exact duplicates it recognises during backup, but it does not delete them from the phone, and it does nothing about near-duplicates, which are most of the problem. The Files app has no duplicate finder for photos at all.
Find exact and look-alike duplicates on the device
Low to Go Storage Cleaner scans your gallery for exact duplicates and similar look-alike photos, groups them, and marks the best candidate to keep in each group. You review the groups, change the selection if you like, and delete the rest in one go. The scan runs on the phone; your photos are never uploaded.
- Install the app and allow file access.
- Open Duplicate photos and start the scan. A large library takes a minute or two.
- Go through the groups. The suggested keeper is the sharpest or largest copy; tap any photo to compare.
- Tap Delete selected. Deleted files go to the system trash where your phone supports it, so you can undo for a while.
A routine that keeps the gallery lean
Run the scan after trips, parties and big WhatsApp weeks, when the duplicates arrive. Turn off automatic media saving in WhatsApp and Telegram so received images stay in the chat until you choose to keep them, and use the gallery's burst grouping to pick one frame before you leave the camera roll.
Frequently asked questions
Will it delete photos that only look similar?
Only if you keep them selected. Similar groups are shown separately from exact duplicates, and nothing is removed without your confirmation.
Does it work with Google Photos backups?
It cleans the copies on your phone. Backed-up photos stay in Google Photos unless you delete them there.
How much space can I expect to recover?
It varies widely; heavy camera and chat users often recover several gigabytes on the first run.
