Phone Storage Full? 9 Ways to Free Up Space on Android
The "storage almost full" warning never arrives at a good time: the camera refuses to shoot, WhatsApp stops downloading, updates fail. The good news is that most phones are carrying gigabytes of things nobody will miss.
First, see what is using the space
Open Settings > Storage. Android breaks usage into apps, images, videos, audio, documents and "other". Note which category dominates; on most phones it is videos and app data, not photos. Everything below targets those.
The quick wins
- Empty the trash. Google Photos and the Files app keep deleted items for 30 to 60 days. Empty both bins.
- Clear WhatsApp media. WhatsApp > Settings > Storage and data > Manage storage lists the biggest chats and forwarded-many-times files.
- Delete old downloads. The Downloads folder collects PDFs, installers and attachments you opened once.
- Uninstall apps you have not opened in months. Settings > Apps sorts by size.
- Back up photos to Google Photos and use its "Free up space" option to remove the local copies.
The bigger wins most people miss
After the obvious steps, what is left is harder to find by hand: exact and near-duplicate photos from burst shots, screenshots and re-downloads; app caches that Android does not count as junk; huge videos buried in a chat folder; and leftover APK installers. Low to Go Storage Cleaner scans for all of them on the device, shows you each group, and deletes only what you tick.
- Install Low to Go and grant file access so it can scan the whole storage.
- Run the Duplicates scan; keep the best shot in each group and delete the rest.
- Run Junk to clear temp files, unfinished downloads, old installers, logs and thumbnail caches.
- Open Large files and filter by 100 MB, 500 MB, 1 GB or 5 GB and up to find the real space hogs.
- Use Compress on videos you want to keep but not at full size.
Nothing is uploaded; the scan and every deletion happen on the phone.
Keep it from filling up again
- Turn off auto-download of media in WhatsApp and Telegram for groups.
- Record video in 1080p instead of 4K unless you need it.
- Run a duplicate and junk scan once a month.
- Move films and large downloads to a computer or cloud storage after watching.
Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to delete cache files?
Yes. Caches are temporary copies that apps rebuild when needed. Clearing them frees space without losing data.
Why does "Other" or "System" use so much space?
It is a mix of app data, caches and files Android cannot categorise. Junk and cache cleaning and uninstalling heavy apps reduce it.
Will a cleaner app delete my photos?
Low to Go only deletes what you select after reviewing each group; it never removes anything automatically.
