How to Put a Floating Photo Locket on Your Android Screen
Home screen widgets disappear the moment you open an app. A locket that floats over everything, swings when you tilt the phone, and opens your favourite apps when you tap it is a very different thing, and surprisingly practical.
What a floating locket is
Gravity Locket places a small framed photo on a thread at the top of your screen. It floats above all other apps, and because it reads the phone's accelerometer, it swings and bounces as you move, like a real pendant. Tap it, double-tap it or pull it down and it launches apps you choose.
Set it up
- Install Gravity Locket and allow display over other apps; that is what lets it float above everything.
- Pick a photo and crop it into a circle, rounded square, pentagon or star.
- Adjust the size, the thread length and the position along the top edge.
- Assign actions: single tap, double tap and pull down can each open an app.
- Allow it to start at boot so it comes back after a restart.
Keep it out of the way
The locket hides itself when the screen turns off, in landscape (videos and games), and on secure screens such as banking apps, so it never covers something important and uses no battery while hidden. Shorten the thread if it overlaps buttons in your most-used apps, and keep the size modest on small screens.
Ideas
- A photo of your partner, child or pet that is always in view, with a tap to open their chat.
- Your own logo as a quick launcher for your business apps.
- A locket that opens the camera on a double tap and the torch on a pull.
Everything, from the photo to the sensor data, is processed on the device; the app never uploads your images.
Frequently asked questions
Does it use a lot of battery?
The physics engine pauses whenever the locket is hidden, including when the screen is off, so the cost is small.
Can I move it to the bottom of the screen?
The locket hangs from the top edge by design; you choose where along the top and how long the thread is.
Will it show on the lock screen?
No. It appears over your apps and home screen after unlocking.
