How to Record a Voice Memo From Any Screen on Android

Ideas arrive while you are reading, replying, or watching something else. Opening a recorder app means leaving all of that. A record button that floats over every screen means you just talk.

What the stock recorder cannot do

Every phone has a recorder app, and it works fine once it is open. The problem is getting there: home, find the app, new recording, and by then the thought is gone. A home screen shortcut helps a little; it still takes you out of the app you were in.

Record from a floating pill

Quick Floats places a small pill on the edge of the screen with four tools, including an audio recorder. Tap the pill, tap record, and keep doing whatever you were doing; the recording runs while you read, browse or text. Recordings are saved to the app's built-in vault in local storage.

  1. Install Quick Floats and allow display over other apps and the microphone.
  2. Tap the pill, choose Record.
  3. Speak, or let it capture the lecture, while you keep using the phone.
  4. Stop from the pill. Play, share or delete the memo in the app.

Uses that stick

  • Dictating a reply you will type up later.
  • Recording your own summary right after a meeting, while scrolling the agenda.
  • Capturing a tune or a line before it disappears.
  • Notes to self while following a recipe or a repair video.

Recording other people: laws on recording conversations differ by country and state. Record your own notes freely; ask before recording anyone else.

The rest of the toolbar

The same pill offers quick notes, a background photo capture and a volume booster, so the one floating button covers most "I need this right now" moments. Everything stays on the device; nothing is uploaded.

Frequently asked questions

Does the recording continue if the screen turns off?

Recording continues while the app is allowed to run; keep the screen on for long sessions to be safe, and exclude the app from battery optimisation.

Can I record a phone call with it?

Android restricts call audio for apps, so it records the microphone, not the call itself.

What format are the memos?

Standard compressed audio files you can share to any app or move to a computer.
